Around 1740 a network of 19 windmills was built to drain the surrounding of Kinderdijk. This surrounding is a beautiful example of a typical Dutch landscape: the 'polder'. Areas of land 7 meters below seal-level that are protected by dikes. An incredible innovative and intricate system keeps the ever-rising seawater from flooding the land. Even during spring tide, the Dutch are safely guarded from being washed away. An important UNESCO World Heritage since 1997, photographed in wintertime.
